4. Personal understanding
Our country has a long history and colorfulculture that spans over 2000 years. As you know, traditional clothing is a keypart of every country`s culture and heritage. One of the most famous traditionalgarments in China, is the “qipao” or cheongsam ( as it is called in the west). The “qipao” is a dress worn by females, the male equivalent is changshan. Despite it`s long history, surviving manydynasties, “qipao” only came to prominence around the 1920`s in shanghai, asfashion awareness grew.
“Qipao” has undergone a lot of changes overthe years and these days, the material used is mainly silk or satin(绸缎). Inprevious dynasties, wool was also used. “Qipao” is a tight-fit(紧身), onepiece dress(一片式结构) that is made to accentuate/enhance the female figure, as is seen inmany Chinese/Hongkong movies. My foreign friends have commented on how amazingactress like “Zhang Zi Yi” and “Gong Li” look in “Qipao”. They have manyforeign admirers. The length(长度) varies. It can be knee, foot or floor length. Some “qipao`s” aresleeveless(无袖) and others have a cap sleeve. They have slits (开叉儿) on bothsides, up to the waist(腰) or hips(臀). Qipao`s can be worn with accessories such as jewelry and they aredecorated with colorful Chinese embroidery(刺绣).
Some traditionalist consider the qipao tobe less conservative and these days most people wear them on special occasions, such as weddings or other traditional ceremonies.
I still recall that during the 2008 OlympicGames held in Beijing, the medal bearers also wore the “qipao”. A friend ofmine who studies in Canada told me that during Halloween, some westerners usethe “qipao” as their costume. 后面的句子是以女同学自己穿旗袍角度切入的,男同学可以照搬的自己女朋友身上。 I have several qipao`s myself and I used to wear them to attendweddings, funerals and other social functions. I haven`t worn them in agesbecause I have gained a lot of weight. In china, being slim is attractive, asopposed to the west. I don`t wanna hinder (ruin) my chances of getting marriedby looking fat in my “qipao”.
