 New law (car safety seats)

A few days ago, Shanghai issued a new Juveniles Protection Law on car safety seats. That is, parents, guardians and relatives will have to install a safety seat before a young child is allowed to ride in a car.Children below 12 years old will have to sit in the back seat because the front seats are designed for adults.

I think it is necessary since accidents often happen to children sitting on the front seat or who are not in safety seats. Many parents have not installed a child safety seat in their cars because of a lack of awareness and no law requiring it, which puts the safety of children at extremerisk.

Current situation makes the children’s safety a big concern.Less than one percent of Chinese parents have installed child-safety seats intheir cars, and some of the few installed seats have quality problems. Besides, some low-cost cars do not even have space to install the safety seats. Many children are sent flying during accidents.

About 20,000 children below 14 years of age die in traffic accidents in China every year. Of that, 75 percent die in accidents involving private cars. That is a staggering number and heartbreaking fact. Comparingwith the situation abroad, where children are required to wear a helmet when riding on a bicyle, we should feel the urge. The new law is expected to bring down the casualty rate by 70 percent. I truly hope that it does.
